Kat, Clint and the Birthday Cake

This scene with the birthday cake was so much fun to shoot. It was also the very first scene I shot with the crew and Dan who plays Clint, so I barely got to get my introductions out to everyone before my character, Kat, just starts laying into Clint about how upset she is with their lives. I knew the cake was going to be crucial to this scene that I was so nervous to get it right! I mean, there are only so many takes you can do when cakes are limited and I don't like seeing sweets go to waste!

When I read the script I just loved how this was going to be everyone's first introduction to Kat. She first appears in this scene loud, cruel, full of hate and pretty selfish when you meet her right there. Her boyfriend Clint is trying to do what he can to make her happy and Kat is not having it, she's done with the broken promises. Especially on her birthday! She wants to enjoy her birthday the way she wants to and doesn't really want to deal with him. I mean it's pretty extreme to yell and throw cake around but still, she's a strong woman and knows how to get her point across. I
mean you'll probably watch this scene and wonder why she is behaving so hostile while Clint is just sitting there calm as a cucumber. She's impulsive and childish. I think she really wants to get a rise out of him but he refuses to give her what she wants. So her final attempt to break into his anger, get him to show some emotion is throwing the cake down, and yet she still doesn't get what she wants.

But starting at this point with Kat i think was great because then you get to see how throughout the film she matures and grows. I think it's going to be a fun process making her into a character that you can love by the end of the film, even if you love to hate her first!
